LOSMANDY FLEXTRAK

40' piece makes an 17' run
2 pieces make a 40' run
 $450

This amazing seamless dolly track can be configured in straight runs that can suddenly curve in any radius or direction. The basic unit is 40', which will loop to make one 17' run. 2 pieces side by side will create a 40' run. Each section rolls up into a 2' diameter bundle and weighs 40 lbs. creating unprecedented portability for a track rigid enough to support an operator, yet flexible enough to curve into a 90 degree turn with a 2' radius. The key to FlexTrak's success lies in the unique capability of our Spider Dolly's track wheels, which are designed with double articulating arms that create the ability to negotiate sharp radius turns. It can also work with other dolly systems because the outer diameter of the FlexTrak is the same as that of standard steel track. However, other manufacturer's dollies may not work as well on our FlexTrak.

"I just love this new production tool." says Director of Photography, Conrad Hunziker III. "The flexibility of shaping the track into virtually any curve allowed us to re-think our shot plans, and create quite complex set-ups that we would never have attempted with conventional track. And best of all, it was unbelievably fast."                Click for larger image

Limitations: FlexTrak does not work well with non-Losmandy Dollies because their wheels usually do not float in and out several inches on one side as do the Losmandy dollies. This means that what is quick and easy for a Losmandy set-up, may prove to be quite tedious for another dolly because these other dollies will not be able to compensate for the deviations in the track spacing. Consequently, they will either pull the track or jump the track whenever the spacing is not precise. Also, other dolly systems will not be able to make tight radius turns, which is a feature of the Losmandy system.

Track Channels: These serve two purposes--either to straighten the track or to act as part of our Track Leveling System. Although the FlexTrak is made of substantial 1.5 inch 85 durometer rubber, and usually lies pretty straight, it sometimes does have a slight wiggle to it. This will vary from piece to piece and is affected by how tightly it is wound when stored, and the temperature it is being used in. Making curves is never a problem, and for most straight runs, one would never notice this imperfection. However, if one is attempting push straight into an object, the camera may detect a slight left-right movement caused by the track. Our Track Channels will eliminate this problem, because the track is snapped into the aluminum channel forcing it to lie perfectly straight. When calculating how many Track Channels are needed, keep in mind that they are only placed on the guide side of the FlexTrak. Our Dollies are designed with guide wheels on one side and floating wheels on the other. The camera is referencing on the movement of the wheels on the guide track side, so you only needs to straighten this side. The Channels are 36” long, so we recommend having 3 or 4 channels in your accessory kit. This will allow you to straighten 9 to 12 feet of track.

End Spacers: The End Spacers are primarily used when one has only a single piece of FlexTrak. When the track is looped backed to create the second rail, the looped end often balloons out making the track too wide for the dolly's wheels. The End-Spacer is used to clamp down on the loop to tighten the distance of the two rails to the proper spacing, and thereby create an extra foot or two of travel that would otherwise be lost. The same is true of the other end, where the track ends tend to curl. When using two pieces of FlexTrak, lying parallel to each other, the End Spacers are usually not needed. The 40 foot run is usually long enough that one does not need to worry about possibly losing a foot or two on each end.
